For a good couple years, I've been maintaining a 64x resource-pack for Minecraft based on the theme of realism.
Over time, it's become a good mix of my own works, as well as the works of other texture pack authors such as Misa or Ovo.

Here's a couple random pictures featuring the pack, so you get the idea:

There's a couple different downloads:

Tslat 64x 1.9 - Optimised
Contains full support for every item & block in Minecraft 1.9
http://www.claytonia.net/tslat/Hosting/Tslat%2064x%201.9%20-%20Optimised.zip

Tslat 64x 1.9
Contains full support for every item & block in Minecraft 1.9 with improved colour depth (larger download and more ram usage). Also full Optifine. Optifine is Highly Recommended

Tslat 64x 1.9 SoundPack
Contains sound replacements for 80% of ingame music and sounds. Use it as an addon, or on its own!

Tslat 64x CleanFont
Replaces the font with a cleaner non-serif font. Great for people who don't like serifs

Tslat 64x NoRain
Does what it says on the tin.

NOTE: Due to limited font support, both the main resource pack and the CleanFont pack fonts aren't as clean as they are with Optifine. If your computer is capable of running Minecraft with Optifine, I very highly recommend using it.

What is Optifine?

Optifine is a free, client-side modification that improves performance of the game, offers a whole host of options for customising your experience while playing, and offers a bunch of tools to resource-pack developers to do things such as:

  • Custom Enchantment animations
  • Different mob skins (even sorted per biome!)
  • Custom Item skins based on item data (want your wooden sword to become more and more splintered as it degrades?)
  • Custom Sky
  • Full Lighting and Shadowing - This makes a HUGE difference to the feel of the game
  • Connected textures - So it's not just blocks repeated one after the other
  • And far more..

Here's where you can find it:

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

What is McPatcher?

McPatcher is a client-side patch that allows texture pack creators to do far, far more with their packs. It allows us to do things like:

  • Custom Enchantment animations
  • Different mob skins (even sorted per biome!)
  • Custom Item skins based on item data (want your wooden sword to become more and more splintered as it degrades?)
  • Custom Sky
  • Full Lighting and Shadowing - This makes a HUGE difference to the feel of the game
  • Connected textures - So it's not just blocks repeated one after the other
  • And far more..

I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The only downside is that it adds a bit more for your computer to work on, so you need a reasonably powerful computer to run smoothly with it.

There's currently no build for Minecraft 1.9, but when there is I will add a link here
(overall relative size change=-3pt)

Wait... "Different mob skins (even sorted per biome!)" -- does that mean you could have biome-colored slimes, jungle creepers, differently-textured spider variants for different biomes, etc.?  :o

I did indeed
It still works for 1.8, but 1.9 doesn't have mcpatcher yet

To note:
Sand-creepers in the deserts
birch wood creepers in birch forests
oak wood creepers in oak forests
snow creepers in snowy biomes

They truely become masters of camoflauge!

I almost want Vanilla to stay 1.8, but then again, that would be in part greatly due to nostalgia, etc., regarding previous vanilla Claytonia Minecraft servers [likely in particular those in and around 2014], plus it would be about as pointless to do as this comment likely was to make -- and then some. (I later realized that the new Path added by 1.9 is exactly what I've been praying for in regard to marking boundaries and outlining buildings [on Claytonia's Minecraft servers] since late 2013.)

Creepers being more biome-camouflaged -- to almost any extent -- in my opinion, is something that would most certainly make the game more interesting (and more fun/challenging as well, imo).

I just realized:
"What about mixed forests?"  :o

I have those set to spawn mixtures of the creeper types that would fit
